CLAN SOCIETY AND ITS BRANCHES

Until the late eighteenth century, there were very few Mathesons anywhere outside Scotland. Today, however, the family has spread across the globe and there are few countries where the name is not known.

The Clan Matheson Society was set up in the mid twentieth century to help members keep in touch with their family and roots. Today there are branches in six countries: England, Scotland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. There are also many Mathesons in Norway.

As well as running their own events and keeping in touch with their own communities, the different country branches take every opportunity they can to get together. This is helped by regular Clan Gatherings, every four to eight years. In addition, members often visit branches in other countries. Whether your name is Matheson, Mathieson, Mathison or a derivative of it, if you or one of your parents or grandparents were born with it, you can be considered for membership of the Clan Society provided that you can establish the Highland original of your family.
